As we all know, there are several benefits of stretching muscles that we gain as we do the stretches. There are actually two basic kinds of stretches, dynamic and static stretch exercises. The dynamic stretches are usually done a short time before a competition or an activity and involve movement of the muscle area while stretching. In contrast, static stretches are usually stretches or poses that are held for several seconds (usually ten or more seconds) before releasing.

Each basic kind of stretch exercise has its merits and demerits, especially the static stretch exercises which are hotly debated. Both stretches have been around for several decades but there is still some controversy regarding the benefits of stretching muscles in each basic exercise.

Dynamic Stretching Exercises

The benefits of stretching muscles in dynamic stretch exercises are usually seen during the competition and afterwards. The benefits of stretching muscles the dynamic way is to reduce the risk of muscle injury. In most cases, an athlete is the one who benefits greatly from the dynamic kind of stretches especially the time prior to a race or athletic activity. The benefits of stretching muscles in dynamic stretches can be seen in the performance of the athlete during the competition and in the state of his used muscles after the competition. During the competition, the athlete does not have to wait for his muscles to heat up and perform at maximum capacity as opposed to just going in to the competition with the benefit of stretching muscle. Going into active mode with cold muscles might injure them or provoke the muscles to twist up and cramp or be strained.

Static Stretching Exercises

Static stretch exercises are usually done before a prolonged activity such as going into cardiovascular exercises or weight training exercises in the gym or outdoors. The benefits of stretching muscles the static way are quite numerous including better and improved blood circulation. Improved circulation indicates better delivery of oxygen to the parts of the body and vital organs that need this.
