Since mountain bike trails usually wind through a wilderness terrain, it takes some hard work in order to develop them enough so that riders do not have to dismount every few feet to get around brush or fallen trees that are too large to pop their bikes across the top of them. Extreme mountain bike trails take even more work since they are usually built up the side of a mountain on the edge of cliffs, waterfalls, and all sorts of other extreme elements. Many times it is volunteers who get together and do the work of building the mountain bike trails, spending their weekends with shovels, graders and chain saws so that the trails can be carved out of the landscape. Building mountain bike trails allows the riders to have options in the difficulty of the trail that they choose to go on and also helps to ensure that more serious accidents from trees, rocks and other material in the trail do not occur.
Trails to Choose
There are mountain bike trails that have been built all over the world so that avid riders can find the perfect one for them. One mountain bike trail that is superbly built is found in Moab, Utah, which has long been known as a Mecca for mountain bikers everywhere. There are a couple of different places that riders can go in Moab, such as Slickrock Trail, which is a difficult ride over boulders and, as the name implies, slick rock where it is hard to break and riders must be experienced enough to let themselves go and ride the trail. Another extremely built mountain bike trail is Porcupine Rim. This trail requires riders to navigate in between rocks and boulders in order to find the way down the mountain.
Another mountain bike trail that has been built is in Fruita, Colorado and is an extensive ride that lasts for thirty miles. This is also a trail that is not for the casual rider since the beginning of the ride requires the mountain bikers to ride up a jeep trail which lasts for fourteen miles, taking the riders up almost four thousand feet. If a mountain biker is not in great physical condition, he will not be able to make it to the top of the jeep road where the downhill trail begins. Going down the trail has many different turns to it but the most exciting part is where the bike will have to be lowered down a rope because there is a waterfall. Once the bike is lowered down then the rider must pick his way down to the bottom to begin riding again.
